Bet of the Day (BOTD)

Just for my sisters, who like a bet, especially if I tip out a winner and extra especially if the winner is at a good price. Updated every Saturday morning.

Saturday, 6 June 2026

What a gloomy, shi**y day.  Might as well watch the racing cos the golf, cricket, football aren't bringing much joy. We will stay close to home (Ellerslie) this week, despite the great fields at Eagle Farm, as the Brisbane winter carnival marches on.

Ellerslie R5, No. 7 Up With Ace did not like the heavy track at Te Rapa after winning a maiden race at Hawera. Could bounce back here. ($31 / $6).

Have a $1 e.w. saver on No. 11 All Aces also $31 / $6 and box up a fixed price quinella 7/10/11.  7 & 11 alone currently paying $326 to run 1st and 2nd, and as a "Same Race Multi" $81 to both be in top 3 and $34 to both run in Top 4.

Ellerslie R6, No. 4 Khan Hunter is an oldie (8yo) but in good enough for to be a good chance here. ($12 / $3)

Ellerslie R7, No. 7 She's a Boss has the benefit of top jockey Craig Grylls riding and will not mind an (even) wetter track by the end of the day. ($12 / $3)

Ellerslie R8, No. 2 Berenhard won over 1400m here last time out. Only another 100m to run this time and current fixed price, with a 2kg claim, seems generous. $26 / $6)

Gosh, just seen sunlight bursting through, what joy.

Saturday 30 May 2026

Eagle Farm is the biggest meeting of the day but take care. These are all as "rough as" but real chances. Smaller bets are advised and include in a quinella bet with a couple of the favourites in their races.

Also recommended is a "multi" bet for a place taking "all four", then "any three" and "any two" in one bet, spending $11. Even the smallest "any two" combination will return $27. Biggest result would be all 4 place to return $2,200 plus the other 10 bets would all win as well. A better chance than a lotto ticket.

Eagle Farm R6, No. 9 Fabulantes, is underrated in this market so price is generous at $41 / $7, but we will take a chance on this proven performer

Eagle Farm R7, No. 11 Defendant is ready to win the Queensland Derby for Chris Waller at 3rd start after a spell ($51 / $11)

Eagle Farm R8, No. 10 King of Roseau is an underrated sprinter who looks a top chance again after winning upon resumption at Gosford $17 / $5)

Eagle Farm R 10, No. 6 Midnight in Tokyo has everything (track, distance, going, 2nd up) in her favour to give a strong chance for a win ($19 / $5)

Saturday 23 May 2026

Ellerslie R4, No. 8 Did the Trick won last start at Waverly, well drawn and if it gets wetter will only enhance chances, $31 / $5.

Doomben R5, No. 12 About to Explode is in great form with a good Qld jockey on top, just beaten by Cloudland at last start, $12 / $3.

Doomben R9, No. 17 Cloudland won last start at Eagle Farm, beating another of today's tips, About to Explode $19 / $5.

New Plymouth R9, No. 4 El Pedro is a last start maiden winner at Hawera. Can go back-to-back here and odds are nice at $19 / $5.

Saturday 16 May 2026

Hope you enjoyed last weekend's winners. $5 to win on each would have provided a $75 profit.

Ellerslie R4, No. 6 Grand Gallo ran a nice 2nd here in April. Wide draw is mitigated by good jockey so a good winning chance. ($9 / 2.8)

Otaki R6, No. 6 Kereti won fresh up in April and can repeat that here. ($9 / $3)

Flemington R7, No. 15 Alainge won impressively at Morphettville two weeks ago (see 2 May tips) and can take advantage of a light weight in this iconic race, which gives the winner a guaranteed start in the Melbourne Cup in November. ($23 / $6)

Flemington R8, No. 13 Immortal Star loves this trip, is in form with a light weight to carry, plus being ridden by Kiwi rising star Logan Bates, so why not? ($14 / $3)

Saturday 9 May 2026

Hope you enjoyed last weekend's winners. $5 to win on each would have provided $115 profit.

WINNER! Rotorua R6, No. 6 Whatthemansaw, last start winner at this track on the heavy, can make it two on end ($12)

LOST? Rotorua R7, No. 9 Donnybrook, loves a heavy track, in fact only heavy tracks ($21 / $5)

WINNER! Rotorua R8, No. 3 Churchillian, at favourite distance & will handle track ($7)

LOST? Gold Coast, R8, No. 6 Platinum Pantheon, a kiwi visitor on holiday, but might as win this $2.4m race while here, eh? ($31 / $6)

Saturday 2 May 2026

WINNER! Morphettville Race 6, No. 8 Alainge ($26) Last start winner, in form, loves distance range, carries light weight and will back up well

Morphettville Race 7, No. 1 Bootlegger ($11) In form, racing well in similar company and due for a win.

Morphettville Race 8, No. 6 Geneva ($26) Ran 3rd in NZ Derby, then won at Trentham and now taking on the SA Derby. Can win and is far better chance than the fixed win price indicates.

Saturday 25 April 2026

Morphettville (Adelaide) Race 7 No. 8 Bona Sforza has come over from NZ to run in Sportsbet Australasian Oaks (G1) having won its last start at Riccarton. It and its jockey haven't travelled for fun, so worth a bet at $35 & $7. Did not live up to hype.

Te Rapa, Race 5, No. 11 Lucy in the Sky ($31 & $6) could prove too good for the rest, has all the wants, good jockey (Warren Kennedy), right distance (1200m) and going (Soft 6) Ran well but not good enough.

Te Rapa, Race 6, No. 9 Ribkraka ($27 & $6), is fresh-up today, not having started since September, but won fresh-up last campaign, trialed well recently, top trainer, apprentice jockey with a claim of 3kg won on track and distance and on soft going. Can easily win for the O'Sullivan / Scott stable. Brave run but not brave enough.

Tip, spend $4 and take a multi with all 3 to place (wins $252) and any two to place (at least $36 back if only two run a place.

Do the same with all three to run in Top 4 (wins $85) and any two to place (wins at least $16) just in case.

Saturday 18 April 2026

Ellerslie, Race 5, No. 12 Written in Heaven ($23)

Won at Pukekohe two starts ago and ran 2nd Last time out same distance 1600m at Te Aroha. Worth following up on better going this time.

Ellerslie, Race 6, No. 13 She Suits Herself ($21)

6 start 3yo filly from top stable who improved last start to win by half a length over same distance and going at Pukekohe. Shapes up nicely

Ellerslie, Race 7, No. 10 Pericles ($31)

Settled back out wide last time then finished nicely to finish 3rd over 1500m here. Steps up to a better journey now and can win this edition of the Easter Hcp.

Saturday 11 April 2026

Randwick, Race 6, No. 8 Marhoona ($10) won for us three weeks ago, so we will stick with him.

Ran okay 4th

Otaki, Race 5, No. 4 Bedtime Story ($16) loves the track, loves the going, loves the distance, no weight and would still be good bet at $8.

Ran well but couldn't overcome wide draw 5th

Otaki, Race 8, No. 7 Surround Sound ($21) last start winner trained by John Wheeler who can repeat that win today.

Ran well, but only 4th

Saturday 4 April 2026

Australian Derby / Doncaster day at Randwick and there's winners to be backed, so Randwick is the focus.

Randwick, Race 5, No. 8 Tom Vegas ($67) is a real roughie with a real chance to provide a good start to the day. Tried G2 company last start and ran last, but we are relying on previous start when he won a qualifier for this in a slick time for this distance on a soft track. Just a small bet and take him in quinellas with first 3 or 4 favourites, e.g. 3,4,12 & 15. Plus, he has "Tom" in his name.

Randwick, Race 8, No. 9 Vivy Air ($26) ran 2nd to Lazzura fresh up in the G1 Coolmore but carries 6kg less in this edition of the Doncaster. Not one of the favoured runners so suggest small each way bet and take her in quinellas with 3 - 5 of the favorites.

Randwick, Race 9, No. 2 Road to Paris ($10) is great value for a last start NZ Derby winner.

Randwick, Race 10, No. 17 Ernaux ($41) is a rarity, a Chris Waller trained horse at $41 ridden by James MacDonald. Rough, but racing against own age group / sex so get on.

Saturday 28 March 2026

A winning result last weekend, but this weekend we look to Trentham for three great chances.

Trentham, Race 6, No. 3 State of Valour has not won yet, but placings have been very good in quality 2yo races, behind some good horses who are not starting here. Should handle the distance, which all are trying for the first time and wet track won't bother him. Current fixed win odds $9.

How did we go? Not good enough. 12th

Trentham, Race 7, No. 3 Enrico a brilliant winner last start and can win again at his favorite track (4 wins). Current fixed win odds $18.

How did we go? Scratched.

Trentham, Race 8, No. 4 Marotiri Molly, ready to step up after a good 3rd at last start here. Current fixed win odds $21.

How did we go? Given every chance but no finish. 12th.

Afterthought - I have spent $4 and taken all three to win for a $1 and any two of the three to win at $1 each. If all three win that is a collect of nearly $4,000.

Better than winning a bonus ticket on Lotto for an outlay of $15. Even all three to finish in the top 4 could return $30 for $1.

Saturday 21 March 2026

"Golden Slipper" day in Sydney, so all the BOTD are at Rosehill, where five Group 1 races are being run.

Rosehill, Race 5, Alalcance (No.6). Little bet here please as this grey mare is the rank outsider in a field of 6, paying $46, but I think she will now be fit enough to do something good here. Suggested bet $1w, $2 to finish top 2 (@$6.50), and a quinella with No.2 and No 4. Starts 4:40 p.m.

How did we go? Last, after being prominent (3rd / 4th) throughout the race. Next time?

Rosehill, Race 8, Stretan Ruler (No.6) can win this edition of the $5m Golden Slipper Stakes. Has run in the right lead-up races, and while drawn widish (13) has good last 600m times, which means can sit off the pace and will finish strongly, possibly over the top of the rest. Starts 6:35 p.m.

How did we go? Got the position it needed in the running, tried in straight, just not good enough. Beaten 2.5 lengths from winner 5th.

Rosehill, Race 9, Marhoona (No.8). Last year's Golden Slipper winner, fitter and ready to win at his 3rd run in this preparation after a close 2nd at last start. Starts 7:15 p.m.

How did we go? Won by a long neck. An equal win bet on each of the three should have returned triple the amount bet.

Saturday 7 March 2026

Ellerslie, Race 8Towering Vision (No. 4), whom I have a very small share in, starts in the G1, $1.25m New Zealand Derby. If you ignore his last start last in the G2 Avondale Guineas a fortnight ago, and think Opie Bosson puts him in the right place at the right time, he's a BOTD.

How did we go? Ran on strongly from turn (after a check at 350m, to finish 7th. Asked to do too much but still ran the 2nd fastest last 200m after the winner. You don't get paid out for 7th. WATCH

Ellerslie, Race 1 The Exponent (No. 1). This is a TAB special race (if your bet doesn't win you get your money back - up to $25. So bet the $25 to win at fixed odds (currently $15) and if he wins you collect $375; if he doesn't win, get your $25 back. You literally cannot lose.

How did we go? Looked a chance halfway down straight but then had nothing to give. What the hell, we got our $25 back.

Flemington, Race 9, Caballus (No. 6) could back up his fresh-up 2nd to Jolies Star. Already a winner down the straight at Flemington and IMHO could be ready to win this iconic Flemington sprint.

How did we go? WINNER? Led all the way and held on to win at $24 / $5 on the tote. Made a not so good day (see Towering Vision) better. WATCH

Saturday 14 March 2026

Whanganui, Race 3 Ledhaven Cassie (No. 11). Can back up maiden win at Hawera with another win here at a nice price. Mereana Hudson rides again.

How did we go? Rear. Ran on strongly from turn to finish 4th, beaten a head. Started at $11 vs. $17 when tipped. WATCH (Click on VIDEO)

Whanganui, Race 5 Knock Off (No. 3) Is fresh up, not having started since September last year, but has won fresh-up at this track, this distance before. Plus, if track gets wetter, that's even better.

How did we go? Thought he was at a rodeo, came out bucking. Life and horse racing sucks sometimes. WATCH - especially the start. WATCH (Click on VIDEO)

Caulfield, Race 9 Storm Leopard (No. 8) A good chance to progress again after last start win at Ballarat.

How did we go? Ran on strongly for 8th, but no cigar, or money for that matter. WATCH

Horse Updates - Tuesday 17 March

Kiss me in Paris

Started in a jump-out over 800m at Cranborne on Monday. Jumped well enough from a wider gate in the field of nine, 3/4 wide midfield, improved around the turn and ran on strongly to finish 4th, beaten about 1 3/4 lengths. WATCH (click on "Watch Jump Out Replay" she's the one in orange, wide).

Very encouraging given her trouble with starting gates.

Towering Vision

After his luckless 7th in the NZ Derby, has had a thorough vet check and passed with a clean bill of health - no problems. Likely to spell now.
